Read, Write, and Knit

A blog all about books, writing, and my favorite… knitting!

Going to the Championship!

I am currently sitting in our room at the Executive Inn in Evansville waiting for my family to finish getting ready.  We are at the Veterans Invitational Tournament for my brother’s club soccer team.  We played twice yesterday, at 10:15am and 2:55pm.  We won both! We won the first game 2-1 and the second game 1-0.  Now, we are advancing to the tournament championship! We play this afternoon at 2:30pm.  I’ll let you know what happens!

The Giver by Lois Lowry

The Story

The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is about a boy who lives in a “utopia”, where everyone receives a job assignment at age 12.  Jonas, the boy, is given the assignment of Receiver, which is the job of holding all of the memories, good and bad, from the past.

My Thoughts

I surprisingly liked this book.  It was really easy and a little boring at first, but it had quite a few surprising elements to the story that I did not see coming.  It is one of my favorite books that we have read in school.

The Prompt Response

Our in- class assignment for today is to answer  one of four prompts about the book.  So, here follows my response.

Jonas has a different relationship with The Giver versus his family. With The Giver, Jonas is open and shares everything that he is thinking.  He feels comfortable around him.  Jonas feels alright with asking questions of The Giver and getting answers.  In contrast, Jonas is not very open with his family.  He is prohibited from dream- telling, and he has to hide countless things from his family.  He is not allowed to share the memories or information he receives from The Giver.  Whereas Jonas is open and trusting of The Giver, he is rather closed around his family.

PicLits

We started Language Arts class today by creating a PicLit, and then creating Edublogs.  I decided to keep my current Edublog for this year as well!  I excited that we are starting to finally use Edublogs!

I am going to leave you with my two piclits.  They go together.  The are about The Giver, by Lois Lowry.

3. The failure- classic!

My favorite sentence:

Ah, failure sweet failure.

Congratulations!

My Dream Vacation

I have always wanted to go to London, England. My parents and older brother went before I was born, but I have never been. When I was in elementary school, we filled out “All About Me” Posters at the beginning of the year. I remember that I always put London for where I would like to go.

One of the most fascinating things to me about London are the buses. To me, they always seem to be the bright splash 3513855in the middle of the city.

How Are Knitting and Reading Affected by Climate Change?

Climate change is “any long-term significant change in the weather patterns of an area”. (Dictionary.com)  But how is that significant to knitting and reading?

When is it best to knit? To me, it’s in the rain or snow with a cup of hot chocolate and friends.  When is it best to read? To me, it’s in the rain or snow by the fire with a blanket. See the connection?

The Earth has gotten 1 degree warmer over the last century. Most scientists think that this is from humans. (US EPA) This heat causes more rain and less snow.

So, if knitting and reading are best in the rain and snow, and climate change is leading to more rain and less snow, then knitters and readers are going to do more rainy day knitting than snowy day knitting.

Big Green Help Challenge #2- Part 1

The three things I want to do to conserve water:

  1. Shorten showers to 5 min. or less
  2. Turn off the tap water as much as possible
  3. Drink tap water instead of bottled water

After a couple of days, I will let you know how it’s going.

Big Green Help Challenge #1

I’m not a big stickler for environmental help. To tell you the truth, I just joined because my pal is running it. I recycle a little at home and school and I unplug stuff when I’m not using it, but I’m not an environmental freak.

My goal for this challenge is to work on my water conserving. Therefore, my category is water.
